A Night Out With the Girls: Sister Schubert Inspires Female Leaders of Tomorrow

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

I meet a lot of interesting people in the course of my travels and speaking engagements, but the group I spoke to on June 11 at Troy University was one of the most special.

I had the delightful opportunity to address the outstanding and talented young women attending Alabama Girls State.

For those of you who don’t know about Girls State, it is a unique summer program that educates the young women of America on fundamental aspects of citizenship. Students experience the processes of government by performing the duties of real officeholders.

The young ladies who were chosen as delegates to Girls State received one of the highest honors conferred on a high school student, and as I stood in front of them, I knew I was looking into the eyes of our next generation of entrepreneurs, politicians and leaders.

As successful women—in the home or in the office—I believe it is our responsibility to teach young women the lessons of our youth and encourage them to dream big and aim high.

As I said to the young women of Alabama, I believe that there is nothing standing between you and the success that you can achieve in life but your willingness to go out there and have the faith to make it happen.

I’m just back from Dallas, where I was a guest on the weekend edition of “Good Morning Texas.”

Weekend anchors Debbie Denmon and Jennifer Schack helped me prepare easy Father’s Day recipes and chatted about my upcoming book, Cast Your Bread Upon the Waters.

When you say the word barbecue, usually that means Dad has to crank up the grill.  I’m happy to share one of my oldest and most treasured recipes, featuring all the flavor of grilled meat with the convenience of the oven.  Mom and the kids can prepare this easy recipe indoors, and Dad can enjoy one of his favorite dishes without lifting a finger.

Last weekend, host Kellie Patterson helped me prepare some fabulous recipes for Father’s Day on Great Day San Antonio.

While cooking, we chatted about my work with Sasha’s Home, a foster family home for abandoned and orphaned children in the Ukraine, and my new book, Cast Your Bread Upon the Waters.

Kellie and I also talked about the importance of the family meal and of spending quality time as a family. One of my missions is to share easy recipes that families can enjoy together, because regular family meals contribute to a better quality of life, especially for the children.

My Mediterranean Rolls make a simple and delicious appetizer, especially when you serve them with homemade coleslaw using the famous Marzetti Original Slaw Dressing.

I had such a wonderful time at the Food Network’s South Beach Food & Wine Festival. It was a privilege to meet some of the Food Network’s celebrities, including Rachael Ray, Paula Deen and Emeril Lagasse.

I also got to visit with Paula Deen and her family during one of her presentations. Imagine my delight when she pulled me up on stage and raved about my rolls!

With fabulous food, inspiring company and the scenic South Beach setting, the festival truly was overflowing with flavor.  The dates for next year’s festival are February 25 - 28, 2010. Hope to see you there!

Learn more about my trip to South Beach and the experience of creating my new cookbook, Cast Your Bread Upon the Waters, in an article published in VIE – People + Places entitled The Joy of Publishing: Cooking a Book.

Sister Schubert on WBIR in Knoxville, Tenn.

Monday, June 1st, 2009

On a recent stop on my media tour, I had the privilege of being a guest on the “Live at Four” show on WBIR-TV Channel 10, Knoxville’s NBC station.

In the first segment, called “Sister Schubert’s Business is on a Roll,” I sat down for a chat with Beth Haynes and LaSaundra Brown about how I started Sister Schubert’s Homemade Rolls.

We talked about the great prizes in On a Roll Recipe Contest and Quality Time Story Contests. They also showed video of our rolls in a local grocery store.

We then moved over to the kitchen set, where the two ladies helped me prepare Lemon-Blueberry Trifle using fresh cream, lots of fresh berries and Sister Schubert’s blueberry rolls.

We also talked about my new book, Cast Your Bread Upon the Waters.

All in all, it was a wonderful afternoon. Many thanks to producer Lee Ann Bowman and all the kind folks at WBIR-TV for so graciously hosting me.
